No Christmas for my Grandkids.?

I live in a small Northern Ca.town,called Merced.The unemployment here is so low, the salvation army has to pay people to ring a bell during holidays,big shortage on volunteers.And when I turned in a 4 day old application in the beginning of this month to the police dept.for[ kids for tots],so my 3 young grandkids can receive some gifts.She returned the paper to me,and said were not excepting no more,we can only except for 500 children.Me and my daughter are on fixed incomes,so we can't afford gifts.I think its time to leave to somewhere like Az.where there are jobs,ect.. Do you agree?

Absolutely. There's nothing in Merced for you to look toward as far as employment goes...so if you want to get out of poverty, you must be proactive. Go where the jobs are.
Reply:That is your decision to make. I am very sorry, I hope that you find some way to get a gift for you grand kids. Maybe you could make them something? It comes from you only, you made it, it will be special.
Reply:I left Butte County California a few years ago and now live in Arizona. Best thing I ever did.
Reply:Just know that unemployment is everywhere. In bigger cities you have to deal with cost of living, lack of people you know and the cost of just moving.



If you have family there though, it might be a good idea.
Reply:Yes, we got out of California many years ago. It was the best thing we could have done. We only pay 350.00 rent for a 3 bedroom house here. California was 1,000.00 a month for a dumpy place. If you have a yard sale and sell some of your stuff you can buy the Christmas stuff you want and it will be easier for you when you move also. We live in a small town now and I love it. We have been here for many years and we have always found work. When we got here we mowed lawns and I did yard work and house cleaning. Then I went to work at a grocery store and my husband did construction. We worked our way up and we have been able to make it here. Now they are building a Walmart and there will be alot of jobs because Nascar is cominghere and a truck stop is being built as well as 600 new homes. This town is beginning to boom. You would be much happier and better off moving out of California like we did.
Reply:Unemployment is everywhere. But definitely if you move to a bigger city or town, you options would be greater at finding good jobs. As for right now, try calling some local churches and ask them if they could help your grandkids out for Christmas.
Reply:Yeah I would move. I moved to dallas I have been here one year and it is so great. WHy not move to dallas there is great job opputunity and help available.
Reply:Your details don't make sense. The employment is low where you live, so you want to move somewhere else where there are jobs? You just contradicted yourself. Maybe if you got out there and rang the Salvation Army bell or got another extra holiday job you would have $$ for Christmas, instead of expecting handouts from others.



Fixed incomes as in the government is already paying you for doing nothing, right? So why does it matter if you move somewhere there are more jobs if you can't/won't work anyway? Do you mean you want to move somewhere where there are more affluent people to give to charity so you can get more free stuff? Do you even realize how selfish and lazy that sounds? Maybe I am misunderstanding somehow; if so, please forgive me. But if your family is truly that needy somehow I think that the local charitable organizations would have identified you and be helping you.



Baby Jesus didn't even have a baby bed and had to stay in a barn with the animals. Mary and Joseph were poor, too. Teach your grandkids about the true meaning of Christmas and to be thankful for what you do have, and look for a way to help somebody else this Christmas instead of looking for ways to get something for nothing. It is better to give than to receive.
Reply:Check the school district or local churches, there are a lot of organizations that can help. As far as the possibility of moving... I'd check into what you are looking to move to first, if you'll be working look for a job first, look at the schools and housing in the area, then look at the crime, and don't forget to look at the prices... it may look great, but if you get there and can't afford your rent you'll be even worse off.
Reply:Definatly time to move. Some small towns have very little to offer. Usually the jobs are handed down through friends/family members. In medium-large cities, there are always jobs available. Be reliable, and hard-working, and jobs will be fighting over you!

Moving to a different state is a huge step!! Think about it and do what you feel is best for your family.
Reply:If you're not happy where you are and you there are no jobs and not enough money, I think you should go ahead and move. Moving can be expensive too though. Hope it works out!
Reply:If you can not take care of them than yes, but don't do it because you can not buy them gifts they should have something, but it does not have to be allot. although it is sad it will make them stronger.

Reply:i live in a small poor town like yours,we dont have salvation army,but the people here are great.so many churches help those like yours.mama always taught me that you have to ask someone,there is always someone to help.she was right.please ask your local churches or friends and a prayer goes a long way.after all christmas is about giving and the birth of jesus.my prayers are with your family this christmas.
