I got my cat 2 years ago and since i got him he has been wearing a collar with a bell and id tag on it. It never bothered him until the week he was palying under my christmas tree and a bell from the tree got caught on his collar he started flipping out and hissing so i finally calmed him down and too it off and he still was actink all weird so i took the bell off his collar and he was still acticg all crazy so i took the collar off and left it off him for 3 weeks and went out and bought him a new one with no bell or id tag and put it on him and he did the same thing?
Did getting the bell caught on him like tramatize him or what?
My Cat is scared of collars?
I doubt he would remember that. I would just have him go without. How comfortable can those things be anyway?
Reply:He feels that the same thing can happen again and is afraid of it.
Reply:He remembers the incident and now has learned that a collar can get him in trouble DON'T try to force him to wear one leave him be about it I doubt if he will ever be willing to again . Cats have a long memory and are extremely intelligent as well as sensitive .
Reply:Yes the Bell from your Christmas tree acted like it was attacking him so he now feel the collar will stop him getting away. leave it a couple of days and let him see the new collar then gentley try to placed it on him againtelling him it's ok
Reply:Probably the shock of the bell falling and the constant ringing so close to his ear caused him some problems.
Cats do remember things that scare them and it will take a bit of patience on your part to bring him round and accept a collar again. It can be done.
Use the one you have - and turn in into a toy for him - a game.
Tie some string to one end and drag it around the floor - he will begin to chase and play with it.
After a few days of this, take the string off it and add a small bell, then leave it lying around on the floor.
He will begin to play with it and the bell will tinkle and he will probably skitter off some where. Don't worry, just leave it lying there.
When you pick him up for a cuddle, pick up the collar as well and just let it be with him.
You are teaching him the collar is safe, and can't hurt him. When he learns this he will be OK with it.
After another few days, just lay it across his neck while you are cuddling him. By this time he have become used to the feel of it and you being calm and easy about it all will reassure him all is well.
Next step is to fasten it loosly around his neck while you are holding him then take it off again and let him play with it.
Keep doing this for a few days, tightening the collar a little more and leaving it on longer each time.
By the end of a few weeks, he should be back to normal and wearing his collar with the bell and ID tag as well.
Good luck, and patience and gentleness will win out for you.
Reply:I have three cats and none of them will wear collars. I tried for awhile and then gave up.
My vet said they really don't need one if they stay inside all the
time. Which is the safest placed for your cat.
If your cat does go out you could ask your vet about getting a chip for identification if your cat should get lost.
Cats have a great memory. You may not be able to get him to wear that collar again since he got so scared. Getting it caught on something is a great hazzard. Good luck, Dorrie
Reply:Yes it did, He became trapped and it may have choked him. He would be better off emotionally and physically if he was kept inside.
