I'm having problems with power surges?

I have a monster Dell with all the bells and whistles. It was a Christmas present. Last week when I was shutting it down, it said don't cut it off, it was downloading some material and would shut itself off. I did so, and the next morning, nothing. I'm waiting for an appointment to get my Dell fixed. So, I dug out my Compaq Presario XP which is a perfectly fine machine. I use a surge protector, too. What should I do? This isn't the first time this has happened. It's happened to the very Compaq I'm typing on now. I've threatened to have it out with the power company, I've wondered if I should get a more expensive surge protector, and since we live across the street from a trailor park and they all have central heat and air, so I wonder if that could be part of the problem. HELP, from anyone, and thanks in advance.

are you sure that there's power surges?

I mean, you are using a surge protector.

you could try getting a UPS also, if you are having power problems.

it could be that your power supply in the computer is failing, you may have to replace that.
Reply:If you have access to a voltmeter, or know someone who does, check your outlets.
Reply:Get yourself a decent UPS.
Reply:Try a power conditioner it should solve all your problems

Reply:The best thing for power surges is a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). They separate you from the AC by running it through a battery so any surges get absorbed by the battery and any drops are filled in by the battery. More info:
