HELP! my dog just ingested some chocolate!!!!!!!!?

I have a teacup maltese puppy (maybe three pounds?) about an hour ago she ingested about half or a little less of a chocolate "bell" i guess from christmas...and i have no idea how she got it?!?!?! It is very small, and she hasn't shown any signs (vomiting, excessive urination, seizures, etc) yet. should I still be worried if she seems ok?

BTW...the cany is very small (bite size) if she had about half at her small size could this be fatal???

i am not going to tell u what to do, but this is what I know:



the darker chocolate the more toxic...



to induce vomiting in a dog, force feed them a cap full of hydrogen peroxide... if this doesnt work, try another....
Reply:She should be ok, might get alittle hypo though. Just make sure she gets alot of water.

Reply:You may NOT have vomiting or diarrhea...people who say they never have problems don't know what is happening inside. It causes liver damage that can only be seen on a DX blood panel.



However you can induce vomiting. Use peroxide. either use a turkey baster and put it down her throat or bette.r.get some vanilla ice scream and mix as much as you can in there...she will lap it up and ( Do this outside) have her keep drinking it until she throws up.



Take her to the vet the next day and have some bloodwork done on her to see if she requires toxiban

Reply:My dog has gotten into my sons holloween candy in the past and had eaten alot more than that and he was fine. Because it's really a small amount Im sure your puppy is fine, but you can always CALL a vet to be sure....you probably will not have to take the little one in. Hope he/she is fine, i'm sure it will be:o)

Reply:Actually milk chocolate doesn't affect an animal as much as people think. It's actually the chocolate that people use for baking that is fatal to animals. I wouldn't worry about that small of amount.

Reply:As long as the bell is milk chocolate and not dark chocolate, I think your dog will be fine. But let me emphasize - I am not a vet or vet tech. Try calling your local Poison Control hotline. It should be listed in the White or Yellow pages. I have called Poison Control numerous times for the stuff my dogs have eaten, and they were always very helpful. My 30lb Beagle mix once ate a whole bag of chocolate-covered coins, but we called poison control and they assured us she'd be fine (she was, thank goodness).
Reply:If your talking about like a quarter-sized piece, your dog will be fine. Such a small amount won't have any affect.
Reply:umm i think that you are freaking out waaay too much. yeah its really dangerous for dogs to eat chocolate but if its milk chocolate and that waxy Christmas kind (which i don't think is hardly chocolate at all) she'll be fine. and that the ingredient that is toxic to dogs. Believe me i freaked out when my four pound chihuahua ate a bag of grapes (also toxic to dogs, especially small ones) but she's fine and we never had to take her to the vet, and if you're really worried just call and ask the vet and ask.



i would also say never take a dog to a kill shelter especially at the recommendation of a fourteen year old animal activist. Every no kill shelter I've ever been to or volunteered at has been absolutely wonderful and if you had to give up a dog always give it up to a dog rescue foundation which fosters pets in pre-approved homes. To give it to a kill shelter is heartless and inhumane.
Reply:Don't worry about it... your dog will be fine. I read once that a 60 pound dog has to eat has to eat something like 120 pounds of milk chocolate to be toxic, so a part of a bell candy wont hurt it.
Reply:I don't think you should worry. I have a 15 year old Pomeranian who probably ate his weight in chocolate before I knew that it would kill him. He continues to enjoy it as does my 2 year old Pom.

Reply:There are certain ways to safely make your dog vomit, but I'm just 14, so I can't give any of the ways I have learned from veteranarian classes, as my parents will be held accountable. However, IMMEDIATELY call your vet. If you don't have one, call an animal hospital, check the yellow pages. Also, if you don't have a Vet, get one immediately. It is not fair, it's like not having medical insurance, or not having a doctor. If you can't afford one, find someone who can to take the dog, or at the worst, give it to a KILL shelter. E-mail me if you want to know the problem with no-kill shelters. I am an animal rights activist, so don't call me a puppy killer or anything.
Reply:Your Dog should be just fine. Yes some chocolate is bad for SOME dogs. Generally though this would have to be a larger sum of chocolate then what your dog has eaten. Trust me my Maltese has gotten her way into our stockings and easter baskets pleanty of times. If you are still worried however watch for any sins of irregularity if something happens call a local vet though I find this happening unlikey.
